Merle Colouring
Merle Poodles and Merle Groodles have a distinctive coat with mottled patches of color and unique eye colors.
The merle gene is incompletely dominant, so not all merle dogs will have blue eyes, and some may have one brown and one blue eye. This gene creates a beautiful and varied coat pattern that is highly sought after.
More About Merle Poodles and Groodles
Merle Poodles and Merle Groodles inherit their unique coat through a dominant gene, meaning only one copy is necessary to display the merle pattern. This pattern is characterised by the random dilution of eumelanin, creating beautiful patches of colour.
Blue Merle Poodles and Blue Merle Groodles are especially prized for their striking appearance, with bluish patches that stand out against their base coat.
At Gramayre, we have bred many Merle Poodles and Groodles, each with their own unique pattern. The Blue Merle Groodle, in particular, is known for its eye-catching coat and friendly demeanour. These dogs are not only beautiful but also make wonderful companions due to their loving nature and intelligence.
When considering a Merle Poodle or Groodle, it’s important to understand the genetics behind their colouring. The merle gene is a heterozygote of an incompletely dominant gene, leading to the varied and unpredictable patterns seen in these dogs.
Our commitment to ethical breeding ensures that all our Merle Poodles and Groodles are healthy and well-cared for.
Do Phantoms Carry The Merle Gene?
Yes, Phantom Merles still carry the merle gene. The phantom markings are visible on Merles or Blue Merles in a different shade, often tan, white, or other colors. It's essential to DNA test for cryptic Merles, where the merle color is hidden under the coat. Single merle dogs are healthy, but breeding two merles can result in "double merles," which may have eye defects or hearing issues. Despite common misconceptions, a merle coat does not inherently mean a dog will have health problems.
A standard merle coat features a diluted base color with random patches of full pigmentation. Variations such as dilute and harlequin merles have recently been recognized. Blue merles, known for their bluish patches, are a stunning example of this unique colouring.
